October 2021 Board Meeting Summary

posted on Oct 31, 2021

The big news: THE BUILDING IS ALMOST DONE, and we want to have a Holiday Party/Open House event on December 4. Hopefully you got the SAVE the DATE email, and the invitation with more details will be sent soon. I am looking forward to having the members come to the building and see for yourself what we have been doing for the last six months. The board decided that in-person attendees for classes, meetings and gatherings will need to have proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID test. This protocol will begin with the Holiday Party. Each training program will make their own decisions as to how to continue to meet--Zoom or hybrid--but it’s looking promising that by January we will begin to have some events, meetings, and programs together again. It has been a very long time.

The Strategic Planning Committee and board are working together on the task of creating a job description for the new Executive Director position. The board will convene for a special meeting to identify qualities and skills important for our Executive Director search. David Thomsen presented a quarterly review of our finances, noting that we continue to rely on good investment returns to supplement our spending and this will not always be the case. NCP needs to prudently balance our program spending with our program income. To do this we must address our ongoing issue of increasing membership and students. Each training program now has a 2021-2022 budget, which will help us identify ways to balance the budget.

The board engaged in a conversation about how to support candidates and students. The Scholarship Committee reviewed 14 applications for needs-based financial aid and awarded a total of $35,900 to those applicants. Six students qualified for a Diversity Fund Scholarship based on current criteria. The board needs further discussion and criteria for considering merit-based scholarships.
