Associate Members

Associate Members have the same voting privileges as Active Members, and may retain the following offices: Treasurer, Membership Director, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program Director (Adult or Child & Adolescent, depending on track), At-Large (Junior) Representative, Program Committee Chair, Diversities Committee Chair, and Research Committee Chair, and additional offices where noted. Privileges also include eligibility to be on faculty with exceptions delineated below. Within the class of Associate Members, there are three subcategories: Psychoanalyst-In-Training, Psychoanalytic Associate, and Psychotherapy Associate. Associate members must be enrolled in training or have completed the requisite number of years of training specified below.

Psychoanalyst-In-Training Members

Organized by NCP's Division of Psychoanalytic Training (the Institute). Must apply and be accepted through the Admissions Committee. Please refer to www.n-c-p.org/training-adult.html for the Adult Psychoanalytic Training admission process and application.

Psychoanalytic Associate Members

Members who have satisfactorily completed all four years of seminar training from NCP, or another psychoanalytic institute with the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA) or the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA), or from an institute with substantially equivalent training, but who choose not to pursue the clinical requirements for graduation. Psychoanalytic Associates are eligible to be faculty for the Institute* and/or faculty for the psychotherapy programs and extension programs.

Psychotherapy Associate Members

Associate members who are psychotherapy practitioners and who have satisfactorily completed NCP’s two-year Psychotherapy training program(s) or have substantially equivalent training as determined by the Membership Committee. Psychotherapy Associates are eligible to be faculty for the psychotherapy programs (see Qualifications) and extension programs.

*An additional approval process is required for graduates of other organizations

Qualifications

An Associate Member must be one of the following:

  • a candidate accepted to the Psychoanalytic Training Program
  • an analyst who has completed the four years of psychoanalytic training but who is not pursuing the requirements of graduation
  • a psychotherapy practitioner who has graduated from either of NCP’s psychoanalytic psychotherapy programs. Graduates of other psychotherapy programs should apply for the Affiliate level membership. Such graduates of programs that are 2 or 3 years long will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Application Procedure

Automatic Membership or Invitation:

Persons who matriculate as psychoanalysts-in-training in the Psychoanalytic Training Program at NCP, but do not pursue the clinical requirements for graduation shall be automatically accepted as Associate Members.

Upon graduation from either of NCP’s two-year psychoanalytic psychotherapy programs, graduates shall be invited to become Associate Members; no application is required.

Application for Membership:

A majority vote of the Board is required to accept all applicants who are not accepted automatically as above.

Applicants must submit the application form on this site with the following addenda. All items are required.

  • Terms of NCP Membership and Hold Harmless Statement- download the document HERE and submit signed copy
  • Ethics Disclaimer- download the document HERE and submit completed and signed copy
  • Current curriculum vitae- including undergraduate and post-graduate education training, dates of graduation and/or certification, and/or licensure, and professional association affiliation
  • Letter of Intent to the Membership Committee
    • Purpose: Clearly state the intention to apply for a specific membership category
    • Interest: Explain why you want to join NCP
    • Benefits: Outline how you intend to contribute to NCP and what you hope to gain
    • Commitment: Express your dedication to participating actively and contributing to NCP's success
  • Copy of current professional mental health practitioner license (or registration card for Research Analysts)
  • Copy of current malpractice policy (coversheet showing policy dates)
  • Transcript from a psychoanalytic training program at a Psychoanalytic Institute approved by APsA or IPA
  • Letters of Recommendation (can be submitted separately):
    • One Letter of Recommendation- from the Dean or President of the previous or current Psychoanalytic Institute; the letter must state that the applicant completed 4 years of didactics and was in good standing
    • Two Letters of Recommendation- from NCP members, organization or academic colleagues, and/or other professionals
