Affiliate Members

Affiliate Members are non-voting members and may not hold elected offices unless otherwise specified. Each of the subcategories of Affiliate Membership have different privileges, which can include eligibility to be on faculty with exceptions delineated below. Within the class of Affiliate Members, there are four subcategories, two of which are dues-bearing categories.

1. Professional Affiliate Members

Psychotherapists, physicians, academics, or other mental health professionals who desire to participate in NCP activities without voting privileges or eligibility to serve as officers or directors. This is a dues-bearing category.

Professional Affiliate Benefits

  • NEW! 20% discount on Program Committee events
  • Eligible as faculty for Psychotherapy Programs and the Extension Program (additional approval process required)
  • Eligible to serve on any NCP committee and may Chair committees that do not hold seats on the Board
  • Access to the NCP Members-only online forum and referral network
  • Subscription to the Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing (PEP-Web) Archive, valued at over $1000

Qualifications

Must be one of the following: a practicing psychotherapist, physician, other mental health professional, or academic.


2. Student Members

College or graduate students in any discipline interested in psychoanalytic ideas and wanting to expand their awareness of psychoanalysis may apply as student members and participate in the various opportunities made available to them at NCP. This is a dues-bearing category.

  • Invitation to attend and participate in the NCP Member Events (Holiday Party, Annual Meeting, etc.)
  • Other benefits as they become available

Qualifications

Must be one of the following:

  • A pre-licensed mental health professional
  • Any graduate or undergraduate student of any discipline with an interest in psychoanalysis or psychoanalytic ideas

3. Community Members

Friends, family, guest faculty, or supporters of NCP who are interested in psychoanalytic thought, principles, and values, but may not meet the criteria to become clinical or academic members.

Qualifications

Must be one of the following:

  • Guest Faculty – by invitation of Program Director(s) only
  • A friend and/or family member of a current member
  • A supporter of NCP

Application Procedure

Application for Membership:

A majority vote of the Board is required to accept all applicants.

Applicants must submit the application form on this site with the following addenda. All items are required.

  • Terms of NCP Membership and Hold Harmless Statement- download the document HERE and submit signed copy
  • Ethics Disclaimer- download the document HERE and submit completed and signed copy
  • Current curriculum vitae- including undergraduate and post-graduate education training, dates of graduation and/or certification, and/or licensure, and professional association affiliation
  • Letter of Intent to the Membership Committee
    • Purpose: Clearly state the intention to apply for a specific membership category
    • Interest: Explain why you want to join NCP
    • Benefits: Outline how you intend to contribute to NCP and what you hope to gain
    • Commitment: Express your dedication to participating actively and contributing to NCP's success
  • Copy of current professional mental health practitioner license* (or registration card for Student Research Analysts)
  • Copy of current malpractice policy* (coversheet showing policy dates)
  • Transcript from a psychoanalytic training program at a Psychoanalytic Institute approved by APsA or IPA
  • Letters of Recommendation (can be submitted separately):
    • Two Letters of Recommendation- from NCP members, organization or academic colleagues, and/or other professionals

Membership Dues

Please note that membership dues are subject to change and typically increase by 3% yearly.


4. Honorary Members

By invitation only. In recognition of their preeminence in the field of psychoanalysis, an offer of Honorary membership may be extended to psychoanalysts who do not practice in Southern California. An offer of membership may also be extended to a non-analyst in recognition of their special services to psychoanalysis or related sciences or activities of NCP. An Honorary member may serve on the Board if nominated and elected by the membership.

Qualifications

Must be invited by a current member with the approval of the Membership Division and the Board of Directors.
