UCLA Classics Club

Thomas Brod, MD, has been assisting the UCLA Psychiatric Residency program with their “Classics Club.” The Classics Club started in 2008 as a semi-structured reading group to discuss classic articles in psychiatry and psychotherapy with an emphasis on seminal papers in psychoanalysis. The curriculum has evolved over the years, starting with foundational readings in psychoanalytic theory and expanding in scope to include papers from anthropology, sociology, cognitive science, and evolutionary psychology. This year, they are building the reading group around a central text to provide additional structure and offer a framework for exploring the major analytic traditions. To that end, each month will alternate between chapters of Freud and Beyond and classic articles from the primary literature.

Tom Brod is assisting them in getting facilitators for the group and, to date, two NCP members have volunteered to lead these discussions. Last month they met with Barnet Malin, MD, to discuss "Sigmund Freud and the Classical Psychoanalytic Tradition.” This month, Joshua Richmond, MPW, will lead an examination of Freud’s "Fragment of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria," more commonly known as the case of Dora.

Charles Drew Psychiatric Residents Hospital Program

Barton Blinder, MD, PhD, Jeffrey Prager, PhD, and Joseph Verrone, LCSW, recently concluded teaching a 10-hour class in psychodynamic theory in the 2022-2023 Charles Drew Psychiatric Residents Hospital program. The program reached those working at the West Central Continuity Clinic and the Augustus F. Hawkins Continuity Clinic. The instruction included Basic Concepts, Foundations of Psychodynamic Theory and Psychotherapy (with Considerations of Expanded Cultural Context), Setting the Frame, and Transference and Countertransference.
