March 2021 Board Meeting Summary

posted on Mar 29, 2021

A member of the Board is being asked to present a “Mission Moment” experience they want to share. This month Gabrielle Taylor spoke about how she introduced poetry in the beginning of her teaching in the Pre-class (a class of four students approved to start full training in the fall), and how she felt it opened a creative and accessible space for the students to engage with the materials she presented. The Board thanked Gabrielle for sharing her experience with the students and demonstrated a goal of NCP’s first Mission pillar of Education, Training and Research.

Dr. Taylor then presented an approach discussed by the Strategic Planning Committee, for an organizational review using comments and suggestions from Board members at its February meeting. It outlined steps needed in the next few months to shape the roles and responsibilities for the Board, the new Executive Director, and staffing structure and positions. The steps in the organizational review emphasize using the mission and vision to guide NCP in its planning and decision making. Also emphasized was the importance of a unified approach including Board members, Education Committee members, Strategic Planning Committee members, and staff to look at areas that need attention. After a lengthy discussion, it was decided that the Diversity Committee work toward policy and procedures, particularly their role in program development and scholarship input. It was also decided that the program leaders of the Psychotherapy Programs and Training Program meet together and, with the Finance committee, create policy and procedure around how scholarships are awarded. And to bring their work back to the Board for review and approval.

Cecilia presented an update on the building renovation project and provided a report on our annual fundraising campaign (2020-21). NCP raised $62,545 in donations, which is up 126% from the previous year. She also reported on the recent program to honor Peter Loewenberg for his exceptional life and work. It was very well attended by many people from around the world via Zoom or by video-taped tributes. Many wrote messages of congratulations and a book of those messages is being prepared and will be presented to Dr. Loewenberg in early April. We will put a copy of the book on the website for members to see.

We are having a site visit by ACPEinc beginning late March. It will be conducted over Zoom and held over three weeks. Many people have been involved in preparing for this important site visit, particularly Jill Model Barth, Cheryl, and all the members of the Education Committee. Thank you all for the hard work you did to prepare us for this visit.
