NCP Member-Only Blog > Letter from the Dean: Fall 2023
Happy Fall to all!
Many thanks to Jill Model Barth, PhD, who has been assisting me in my "onboarding" this summer, and thank you to all of our leadership for supporting me during this time of transition. This year, the Education Committee (EC) will focus on matters of diversity, live vs. remote education, BPPE (State of California) approval, and recruitment at all levels.
Education Committee Updates:
I am delighted to announce 2023-2024 Education Committee (EC) news.
* New Members - Our new Research Psychoanalyst Training Committee Chair, Cheryl Goldstein, holds a PhD from UCLA and a PsyD from ICP (and has recently joined NCP as a dual member). Please welcome her when you have an opportunity, at cheryl.goldstein.ph.d@gmail.com. Stepping up to fill Joe Verrone's seat is Ethan Grumbach, PhD, as the EC's Diversities Committee Representative. Brian Stachowiak, LMFT, has been appointed Chair of NCP's Committee on Diversities and Sociocultural Issues, and I have invited him to attend our meetings periodically to give us updates on that Committee’s work, particularly as we continue to address the issues raised by the Holmes Report. Christopher Walling, PsyD, MBA, FABP, and Aimee Martinez, PsyD, were elected to their Jr. Faculty Representative positions back in May and have both begun their terms on July 1. This fall, Luis Nagy, PhD, FIPA, will begin serving as Co-Chair of the Admissions Committee. Sheryl White-Chase, PhD, has joined us as the new IAC Committee Chair. Julie Tepper, LMFT, stepped down from that role in June. We will forever be grateful to her for her service! Julie has raised the IAC bar, and has graciously worked with Sheryl during the transition. Anyone who has completed a training program to become a psychoanalyst and is an NCP member can request to be an IAC discussant. Please contact Cheryl in my office if you have an interest in participating, or if you are a new NCP member and want to know more about what an IAC is! Additionally, Alison Davies, LCSW, is now our Clinic Coordinator. Alison has hit the ground running, with support from Amber, Cheryl, Tina, and others. She will be working with us to develop further our capacity to meet the needs of our community over time. Welcome!
* Open EC Seats - The EC has an open seat for a Sr. Faculty Representative. These positions are voted on by the faculty in the spring. There is also a process in place for self-nominations. Please reach out to me if you are interested in learning more about this position, or if you know of someone you would like to see nominated next year. Your voices and your expertise are most welcome at the EC! The EC also has an open Clinical Associates Organization (CAO) President opening. We want to thank Jennifer Flores, LMFT, for helping us to liaise with the CAs in the meantime.
Recruitment:
Unfortunately, our rigorous application review period this year did not result in a (minimum) class of four Clinical Associates. We admitted two applicants with impeccable credentials, both of whom are now student members of NCP, and will, we hope, enroll with us next year. Travis Tanner, PhD, LMSW, and I reached out to them personally this past Sunday to congratulate, welcome and begin orienting them.
To bring as many of us together as we can, we are hosting a Meet & Greet with me on November 18 for current and former Clinical Associates, two-year program graduates, and those who have shown an interest in training in the past few years. Please spread the word. Help us reach out to as many of the curious as possible!
Also, please encourage your students, supervisees, and others in your circles to consider applying to APT, and encourage your colleagues to consider joining us as members! If you forward the names of those interested to CherylD@n-c-p.org, Cheryl will add them to the invitation list.
International Applicants - An important clarification about our requirements for admitting international students: in addition to being licensed, anyone applying from another country also must hold a Master's Degree in a mental-health-related field.
My own "In-Person" Policy - While I remain based in Santa Barbara, I hold regular Dean's hours most Fridays from 11:30am-1:30pm, and from 2:30-5:30 pm. Please pay me a visit! You will be most welcome. I have so enjoyed meeting and reconnecting with many of you in our meetings and one-on-one conversations, which I would like to continue.
