From the Dean

The best possible news: this past June our APT program graduated Natalia Boucher, Fredrick Edo, Jennifer Flores, and Angel Cienfuegos. Congratulations again and again! The EC also has new Committee members to celebrate: Elahe Sagart, standing in for Susan Donner this coming year as CAPT representative; Daniela Flores Mosri and Ed Shafranske, Co-Chairs of Research; Jennifer Flores, Chair of Curriculum; Van Dyke DeGolia, IAC Chair; and Christopher Walling, Faculty Chair. Bart Blinder and Dahlia Russ are now serving as Senior Faculty Representatives. Eli Diamond has been elected as the new Jr. Faculty Representative. Jack Brennan has accepted the role of CAO President. Thank you all for joining us!

In other developments, the EC has voted in a new Attendance Policy for this coming academic year, which will be more responsive to the IPA’s promotion of in-person activities for psychoanalysts, as will new requirements for in-person work on training cases. NCP, like the IPA, also respects the wider access to psychoanalysis afforded by online work, and the need for training to make the best possible use of this modality. Look for coming announcements about training opportunities and requirements!

There’s more: the EC also thanks the Admissions Committee and Cheryl Difatta for their very hard work on recruitment this year. Our AC Co-Chairs, Sidonie Freeman and Luis Nagy, and other Committee Members attended Open Houses and gave presentations both at NCP and at local clinics, as did our Candidates. Special thanks to Jennifer Flores and Natalia Boucher, who arranged and staffed an NCP booth at a CAMFT-LA conference this past spring. The results are encouraging to say the least: six admits so far, including our very first Transfer Candidate, with more application reviews yet to be completed! Our Transfer Candidate’s Training Analyst has also received a Waiver from the TA/SA Subcommittee, which will be meeting again on September 15, 2024. Contact Jill Model Barth if you have any matters for the TA/SAs.

Even more: our Child Training Program welcomes new Child Candidates Jennifer Flores and Aimee Martinez. The Dean is continuing her own education by attending a Center for Advanced Study of Psychoanalysis conference in Woodstock, VT, this coming August. Deborah Kirschbaum, Chair of Progression, completed the process of becoming a Training/Supervising Analyst this past Spring. Congratulations, Debbie! Travis Tanner and Elahe Sagart just finished their first year facilitating the new Clinical Moments, to much acclaim; Glenn Mowbray is now the Interim President of CAPA, the Chinese-American Psychoanalytic Association; we are delighted to announce that C/APT will resume Infant Observation instruction this coming academic year, under the direction of Ethan Grumbach and Elahe Sagart; and, last but not least, Chris Walling and Jessica Benjamin will be interviewed in the upcoming season of “Psychoanalysis and You,” APsA’s Podcast, which can be downloaded on Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. Look for it!
