A message from the Board Nomination Chair, Paulene Popek, PhD

The role of a Board Member is someone who:

  • Understands that the authority rests with the board as a whole
  • Speaks with one voice
  • Functions professionally
  • Keeps Board confidentiality
  • Is a reliable ambassador
  • Refers operational matters to the EC
  • Follows board process
  • Stays strategic
  • Continues to learn about governance and develop internal leadership

Board members’ fiduciary responsibility is to oversee:

  • Long-range financial planning/facilities planning
  • Predict needs and ensure appropriate strategies for meeting needs
  • Oversees finance, investment, and assets
  • Reviews and approves annual operating budget and monitors progress
  • Approves budgets, tuition, and compensation
  • Supports fundraising activities

Why take on a Board position?  There are many reasons both personal and for the future of the Institute.  Being a part of the leadership at NCP has many rewards.  Our Institute encourages those who have an interest in becoming part of a leadership team to consider several open positions on the Board.  Please contact me if you want to hear more about these possibilities now or in the future.  Paulene Popek (ppopek123@gmail.com)

Here’s what two people said:

“Serving on the Board of Directors for me has been an experience of learning about myself in ways I could never have imagined.  I learned a lot in my analysis, but I learned a whole lot more as a Board member.  I got better at staying in and with the conversation even when discussions reflected differing perspectives.   There is also something wonderful about working with people who share my passion for psychoanalysis.”

“My time serving on the Board for the past five years offered a buoy of community during a time of global isolation as well as sweeping solidarity. I learned lessons in real-time democracy and the challenge to truly allow each voice to be heard. I feel honored to have been able to serve in a leadership position supporting our mission - deepening our understanding of being human through the theory and practice of psychoanalysis.”
