Bio/Background:

Chao-Ying Wang, Ph.D., Psy.D. is a psychologist and psychoanalyst practices in Rowland Heights and Irvine, California. She works with adults, adolescents and children. In addition to English, she is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Korean.

Prior to completing her analytic training in 2001, Dr. Otto Kerngerg, the President of the IPA in 1999 or 2000, sent out an email inquiring if any analyst or candidate spoke Chinese. As Chinese was her first language, she responded to his email. Not too long after that, she got a call from Dr. Bob Tyson, who was the Secretary of the IPA at the time. In this telephone conversation, Dr. Tyson informed her that she was the first Chinese speaking American trained psychoanalyst. Dr. Wang has been actively involved in the Chinese communities in San Gabriel Valley and Orange County to increase the awareness of mental health issues in the past twenty years. With a group of mental health professionals, the Chinese American Human Services Association, she promoted psychological well-being and disseminated mental health-related information to the Chinese communities through seminars, and interviews with newspapers, radio and TV stations. Dr. Wang completed her analytic training at the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute, now the New Center for Psychoanalysis. She received her bachelor’s degree at National Taiwan University and doctoral degree at the University of Southern California. She was affiliated with the Asian American Research Center at UCLA and received NIMH reseach grant. She also worked as an NIMH postdoctoral fellow, a lecturer and research psychologist at UCLA from 1988 to 1991. While in private practice since 1992, Dr. Wang worked for Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health for many years as well.
