Bio/Background:
I was trained at NCP’s predecessor, the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, and also studied under Anna Freud in a Yale Law School course and for two summers at the Hampstead Child Study Course and Clinic in London. I am registered as a California Research Psychoanalyst. (I wrote the law creating that status.) In addition to NCP, I was previously among the first members of the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis. I’m a former chair of the ethics committee at our institute, and former president of the Council for Psychoanalytic Education, which was then the national candidates’ organization. At the University of Southern California, I hold the UPS Foundation Chair in Law and Gerontology, also am Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences, and I am Senior Vice Provost of the university. I taught Psychoanalysis, Psychiatry, and Law for many years at USC; have also taught that at Columbia University law school; and have lectured at Columbia University medical school, George Washington University medical school, the Oxford University professorial unit in psychiatry and University College, and an international conference at Peking University. I've edited books on Law and Psychology (NYU) and Mental Illness, Medicine and Law (Ashgate) among others.
