The Assistant (2020) (1 hr 27 min) Jane, a recent college graduate and aspiring film producer, just landed her dream job as a junior assistant to a powerful entertainment mogul. Her day is much like any other assistant -- making coffee, ordering lunch, arranging travel accommodations and taking phone messages. But as Jane follows her daily routine, she grows increasingly aware of the abuse that insidiously colors every aspect of her workday, an accumulation of degradations against which she decides to take a stand.

Schedule
6:45 PM - 8:15 PM: Group viewing of the movie with a silent chat. We will join the Zoom meeting and press "play" simultaneously to watch the movie together. Please purchase the movie before joining the meeting. (Viewing with the group is optional. You can purchase and watch prior to this and still participate in the discussion.) No credit
8:30 PM - 10:00 PM: Discussion begins. We will hear from our discussants and explore the film together.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:
- Describe the sexist micro-aggressions portrayed in The Assistant in terms of a) dissociation or b) splitting and projection of the self
- Explain how you would manage the affects of a patient/client reporting micro-aggressions to you in a psychotherapy session
- Using this film as an example, define the defense, “identification with the aggressor” and contrast with “externalization of the self"
Discussants:
Sidonie Freeman, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and Psychoanalyst in private practice in Beverly Hills. Dr. Freeman is an Adjunct Professor at The Chicago School for Professional Psychology, Los Angeles, and she also maintains a Supervisory position at the Wright Institute, Los Angeles. She is the President of The Foundation of LACPA, the non-profit and benevolent arm of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association which has regularly sponsored educational and skill building opportunities for those entering into and already in the mental health field. Dr. Freeman is the Chair of the Admissions Committee at the New Center for Psychoanalysis (NCP), as well as Chair of the Clinical Moments Committee, which facilitates and spreads awareness of the value of psychoanalysis within the community.
Fredrick Edo-Okuonghae, PsyD, LMFT, is a second-year candidate at NCP in the Adult/Child and Adolescent programs. He works primarily with children and adolescents, along with high-level professionals in sport and performance-based fields at a private practice located in West Los Angeles. He also runs groups for schools and organizations throughout the state of California. He is adjunct faculty at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles. He is the California diversity delegate for the American Psychological Association and a board member of the California Psychological Association.
Discussion Moderator: Thomas M. Brod, MD. Dr. Brod coordinates the NCP Film & Mind Program with Apurva Shah, MD.
Target audience: Mental health professionals and open to the public interested in psychoanalytic perspectives. Open to members and the community.
