The field of Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma (ITT) has been of interest to psychoanalysts and traumatic stress researchers for the past five decades. First described by psychoanalysts, themselves Holocaust survivors, this field of inquiry has been at times considered controversial. A large body of psychoanalytic literature based on clinical experience has stimulated both clinical and neurobiological research. This important work has provided evidence that parental trauma is transmitted to offspring in an encoded manner through multiple pathways. These may include the vertical non-genetic transmission of traits, exposure of offspring to parental child-rearing difficulties, transplacental transmission of dysregulated neuroendocrine function, and long-term epigenetic consequences. Regulation, attachment, and transference, when working with traumatized individuals, will be covered. Dr. Novac will also illustrate proposed neural mechanisms of error prediction and predictive coding in memory reshaping in therapeutic processing. 

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this program, participants should be able to: 

• Explain how trauma can be transmitted to future generations through multiple pathways
• Discuss how transmitted trauma may impact regulation, attachment and transference
• Describe the connection between memory reshaping and the therapeutic process

Discussant:

Andrei Novac, MD, is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine, where he has supervised and lectured for over 30 years. Dr. Novac will share his experience of over 25 years as the founding director of the Traumatic Stress Program in the Department of Psychiatry, UCI and as a past chair of the Intergenerational Study Group at the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies. He is the author of over 50 academic papers and book chapters on mood disorders and on trauma and brain function and behavior. He is a member of NCP, where he serves on the Research Committee. Additionally, he is the author of three books of poetry.
