This faculty workshop is part of Drs. Hart and Stoute's Zoom visit with us titled "Otherness as a Psychoanalytic Subject: Race, Culture, Class, and Difference in the Clinical Encounter.

Attending to issues of racial difference and discrimination presents many challenges and opportunities for the psychoanalytic training process. In this workshop for faculty we will consider the possibilities and the risks associated with explicitly attending to race. What are the risks? What might the possibilities be? We will focus on opportunities and risks in the classroom and in psychoanalytic supervision. In cultivating curiosity and openness about racial difference, how can we identify the entry points to greater psychoanalytic understanding on the parts of supervisor and supervisee, and teacher and student alike?

Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the risks associated with addressing issues of race in the psychoanalytic classroom and supervisory relationship.
  • List three ways of initiating dialogue about race and racial difference.
  • Identify and manage the attendant anxieties associated with addressing issues of race and racial difference.
