You are certain to enjoy the movie Blinded by the Light and you will likely tune up your cross-cultural psychotherapy skills from our program with its discussion. Blinded By the Light— based on a true story — showcases Bruce Springsteen’s music as the driving force in the life of a 1980s teenager in a London suburb. Javed, the son of Pakistani immigrants, is 16 and feeling very stuck in a small town where the local racists are keen to shut down its one mosque. An aspiring poet and lyricist, he is intimate with Springsteen-esque conditions: of being tired and bored with himself, of wanting to change his clothes and hair and face, of asserting that he’s a man and not a boy, and of believing in the promised land. Among other things, the movie is an astute statement on the tensions within an immigrant family, the push of the younger generation to assimilate, and the fears of the older, traditional generation of loss of their culture. The film captures both the grittiness of Javed’s short life and the exhilaration he feels with his experience of Bruce Springsteen and his music.

Schedule

6:45 pm: Group viewing of the movie. We will join the Zoom meeting and press "play" simultaneously to watch the movie together. Please purchase the movie before joining the meeting. (Viewing with the group is optional. You can purchase and watch prior to this and still participate in the discussion.)

8:45 pm: Discussion begins. We will hear from our discussants and explore the film together.

Discussion Topics:

• Describe the notion of the psychoanalytic act, differentiating it from acting-out and passage to the act; Explain how this can be used in therapeutic practice
• Explain how adolescent “hatching” is complicated by factors of cultural dislocation and cultural bullying
• Discuss the psychological transformation by which an adolescent can be protected from despair and find the the energy and spirit to move forward and grow up through deep engagement of his/her passion or interest

Discussants:

Gabriela Costardi, PhD, is a psychoanalyst in private practice in Los Angeles. A graduate of the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, her practice is oriented by the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan, who followed in the footsteps of Freud. She is currently the Delegate of the California Forum of the Lacanian Field. She has presented papers and published book chapters and articles on topics related to clinical practice and contemporary political theory.

Target audience: Mental health professionals and open to the public interested in psychoanalytic perspectives. Open to members and the community.
