(2019, South Korea)

Parasite was the 2020 Oscar winner for director Bong Joon Ho for Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Directing, and International Feature Film…and a slew of other international awards, including the Cannes Palme d'Or. Greed and class discrimination threaten the newly formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan. "A miracle of a film. It feels like Bong Joon-ho’s already extraordinary career has been building to this: a riotous social satire that’s as gloriously entertaining as it is deeply sardonic,” wrote John Nugent on EmpireOnline.com.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:

  • State two examples of how Freud’s “return of the repressed” is represented in the film

  • Discuss conscious and unconscious aspects of rage and paranoia in class struggle

  • Identify three examples of dream symbols in the film that can be used to understand the film
