Film and Mind: "Hotel by the River"

In the cold of winter, snow covers and distills the earth. Award-winning director Sang-Soo Hong explores in this movie aging, relationships, death and desire. Poet Yeong Hwan (Joo-bong Ki) calls his two sons (Hae-Hyo Kwon and Jun-Sang Yu) to meet up with him. Meanwhile he runs into two young women (Min-Hee Kim and Sun-Mi Song) who were also staying at the hotel.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

Identify the theme and various emotional states portrayed by the characters
Compare and contrast culturally specific emotional experiences and expressions with universally shared human emotions

Discussants:

Chao-Ying Wang, PhD, PsyD, is a psychologist and psychoanalyst who practices in Rowland Heights and Irvine. She works with adults, adolescents and children. In addition to English, she is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Korean. She was the first American-trained, Chinese-speaking psychoanalyst. Dr. Wang has been actively involved in the Chinese communities in San Gabriel Valley and Orange County to increase awareness of mental health issues over the past twenty years. Dr. Wang completed her analytic training at the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute, now the New Center for Psychoanalysis. She received her bachelor’s degree at National Taiwan University and doctoral degree at the University of Southern California. She also worked as a NIMH postdoctoral fellow, a lecturer and research psychologist at UCLA from 1988 to 1991. While in private practice beginning in 1992, Dr. Wang also worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health for nineteen years.

Bettina Soestwohner, PhD, PsyD, holds a doctoral degree in Comparative Literature from UC Irvine. She is a Graduate Research Psychoanalyst and faculty member at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Newport Psychoanalytic Institute. She is a member of the California Circle of the EFQ (Freudian School of Quebec) and of the IFLF (International Forums of the Lacanian Field.) She has a private practice in Los Angeles.

Target audience: Mental health professionals and open to the public interested in psychoanalytic perspectives. Open to members and the community.
