Pathways to Pain Relief® - Master Classes in Treating Psychophysiologic Pain Disorders (PPD/TMS)

10am - noon:  Experiencing the Pain Matrix® with Dr. Anderson

In this seminar, we will explore early life pain memories to shed light on how they impact the adult’s experience of somatic pain and how they can be used to guide treatment interventions.  Participants will receive two articles to read one week before the class.

Dr. Sommer Anderson will use her experiential learning technique, Experiencing the Pain Matrix® to guide participants in a silent experiential process about early pain memories.  In discussions that follow, she will elucidate the role of sensory, emotional and cognitive processes that influence our perception of sensations that we label painful.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how the perception of pain is comprised of sensations, emotions and cognitions/beliefs by participating in silent guided experiential exploration of pain memories using Anderson’s experiential teaching method, Experiencing the Pain Matrix ®

       2. Apply the integration of pain memories in the treatment of chronic somatic pain

Readings:

Dr. Anderson would like you to read the following materials for her portion of the Master Class. Please download them now:

1:30pm-3:30pm:  Common Pitfalls and Dilemmas in working with Tension Myoneural Syndrome(TMS)/Psychophysiologic Pain Disorders(PPD) with Dr. Sherman

Somatic symptoms serve as a means to protect an individual from unbearable emotional distress.  The aim of treatment is to eliminate the pain symptomatology by helping the individual identify and tolerate feelings that were previously foreclosed or disavowed. Once the feelings are tolerable, underlying emotional issues and/or unresolved traumatic material which contributed to the development of the pain symptomatology can be resolved.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how to define PPD, how to distinguish PPD from malingering, hypochondriasis, and other conditions and list the different presentations of PPD
  2. Explain the multiple and overlapping etiologies of psychophysiologic pain syndromes including unresolved traumatic material, and apply interventions based upon etiologies of PPD

Target Audience: This conference will be informative for mental health clinicians from all disciplines at every level of development and students as well.
