(2018, German. Directed by Christian Petzold)

In an attempt to flee Nazi-occupied France, Georg assumes the identity of a dead author but soon finds himself stuck in Marseilles, where he falls in love with Maria, a young woman searching for her missing husband. Transit is an existential thriller about loss, identity, trauma, statelessness and historical repetition. This film stirs up issues around national identity and its relation to the self and has major significance for today’s world.

A discussion will be held after the film.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe treatment issues in clinical practice resulting from the loss of identity, home, and family
  2. Discuss the way loss, mourning, and reparation are seen in this film and apply in clinical practice.
  3. Using the film as an example, assess how survival adaptations in adults can permanently alter character structure.
  4. Explain how Winnicott’s concept of “false self” can be applied to the film’s characters
