Blink Twice (2024, Zoe Kravitz director & co-screenwriter, 1 hr 42 min) tells the story of a dream-perfect island retreat turned sinister, where guests become entangled in a web of memory manipulation and psychological control. Set against the alluring backdrop of wealth and exclusivity, the film traces themes of power, complicity, and the struggle to reclaim personal identity in the face of cyclical abuse.
In this session, we will use a psychoanalytic lens to unpack the film’s central conflicts, focusing on questions of repression, traumatic reenactment, and the role of group dynamics in facilitating or resisting harm. Note that Atlantic Magazine called Blink Twice “the movie that mattered most in 2024.”

We will not watch the film together prior to the discussion. Participants should watch the film beforehand or begin screening on their own before 6:15 pm PT.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:
- Recognize and apply concepts of Dissociation and Repression: identify how unconscious defenses can manifest when individuals are exposed to repeated or overwhelming trauma, and discuss strategies for working with these defenses in clinical psychoanalytic practice.
- Analyze Group Dynamics and Power Structures: examine how hierarchical relationships, charismatic leadership, and social pressures influence individual behavior, collective denial, and the perpetuation of harmful patterns. Formulate interventions that address these dynamics in treatment settings.
- Address Traumatic Reenactment in Clinical Practice: explore the phenomenon of reenacting past traumatic experiences in the present, with a focus on how to detect, interpret, and intervene therapeutically. Emphasis will be placed on understanding transference and countertransference implications as they emerge in the analytic process.

Discussants:
Christopher Walling, PsyD, MBA, FABP is a licensed clinical psychologist, board-certified psychoanalyst, and an active leader in the bio-behavioral sciences. Dr. Walling is Associate Professor in the Department of Research Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, a Fellow of the American Board of Psychoanalysis, a Fellow of the International Psychoanalytical Association, and a member of the New Center for Psychoanalysis where he serves as Faculty Chair in the Adult Psychoanalytic Training program. Dr. Walling also serves on the American Psychoanalytic Association’s Committee on Gender & Sexuality and is a Fellow of the Kinsey Institute.
Gregory S. Rizzolo, PhD is a faculty member at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and at the Institute for Clinical Social Work. His work has appeared in Psychoanalytic Psychology, The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, and The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA), among others. He was recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of JAPA, one of the leading psychoanalytic journals in the world, and is the author of The Critique of Regression (Routledge, 2019).
