Perfect Days (2023), a Wim Wenders film set in Tokyo, is a tale of the small human dramas in an evidently functional civil society. Wenders portrays the vitality of a contemplative man who cleans public toilets, quietly affecting the lives of those who encounter him. (The film rated 96% positive on RottenTomatoes.com).

We will not watch the film together prior to the discussion. Participants should watch the film beforehand or begin screening on their own before 6:15 pm PT.

Discussants:

Gerard Sobnosky, LMFT, is a Psychoanalyst and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in San Pedro, CA. He holds two Masters degrees in Psychology and is an active member at the New Center for Psychoanalysis (NCP) in Los Angeles. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA), serves on the APsA Finance Committee, and the American Psychoanalytic Foundation, and is Treasurer of the APsA Candidates Council. In addition, he is Vice President for North America for the International Psychoanalytic Studies Organization.

Peter Rainer is the Christian Science Monitor film critic and appears regularly on “Film Week” on LAist, the local NPR affiliate. He was a finalist in 1998 for the Pulitzer Prize in Criticism and has won numerous first-place awards for his criticism from the Los Angeles Press Club. Prior to the Monitor, Peter was a film critic for New York magazine, the Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. He is the author of “Rainer on Film,” which collected his best reviews and essays over a thirty-year span. He also edited the criticism collection “Love and Hisses.” Peter is also the writer and co-producer of A&E Biographies on Sidney Poitier and John Huston. Peter received a B.A. in 1973 from Brandeis University, majoring in English and American literature and graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn an M.A. in film from USC. He has lectured on film worldwide, including India and Abu Dhabi, and served on the main juries for the Venice and Montreal film festivals. Peter has lectured and taught classes in film at, among other institutions, Columbia University, NYU, the New York Film Academy in Burbank, Loyola, UCLA, AFI, and USC. He has also appeared over the years as a film commentator for such outlets as CNN, ABC World News Tonight and Nightline. His father, Dr. John Rainer, M.D., was a prominent New York psychoanalyst who was chief of the Department of Medical Genetics at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He is recognized especially for his pioneering work on the psychiatric problems of the deaf.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT 

PHYSICIANS: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of American Psychoanalytic Association and the New Center for Psychoanalysis. The American Psychoanalytic Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Psychoanalytic Association designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

PSYCHOLOGISTS: The New Center for Psychoanalysis is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The New Center for Psychoanalysis maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Psychologists must report CE credits directly to MCEP using this document to verify attendance. Please note that a psychologist must attend the CE program in its entirety in order to receive credit.

The APsA CE Committee has reviewed the materials for accredited continuing education and has determined that this activity is not related to the product line of ineligible companies and therefore, the activity meets the exception outlined in Standard 3: ACCME's identification, mitigation and disclosure of relevant financial relationship.
