The Menu (2022,1 hr 47 min) directed by Mark Mylod is a black comedy (or satire) starring Ralph Fiennes as a celebrity chef and Anya Taylor-Joy as the audience’s stand-in for innocent participant in an exquisite meal-performance served for the most privileged of elite society.  We catch on rather soon that, despite offering food of the highest quality, our genius chef had planned there to be no survivors.  We are treated to a creation embedded in appetite and death anxiety.

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

  • Define "pathological accommodation”, as exemplified in various characters in The Menu, and describe its unconscious dynamic in each subgroup.
  • Describe dynamics of subgroup formation, cohesion, and disunion as exemplified in the film, The Menu.
  • Explain how regressive need-to-be-fed (dependency) generates destructive fantasies within individuals of “Privileged/Dominant” class structure, setting up corresponding fantasies in the de-humanized serving classes.
  • Explain how a “Veneer of Civility” functions to obscure primal social dynamics
