On May 12, Film & Mind explores what makes a transformative movie with a doubleheader of two films of vastly different subject matter—Ted K ("The Unabomber”) and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. We will consider how each illustrates the art of universalist filmmaking while exploring specific and psychoanalytically important themes.

Ted K (2022, 2 hours, directed by Tony Stone) is a remarkably interesting film about the pathological idealism of domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber of the late 20th century. Utilizing a spare voiceover (culled from Kaczynski’s voluminous “Manifesto” ) and shot in the remote mountainous area of Montana where the Unabomber was arrested, the film invites us into the autistic mind of Kaczynski and his 17-year-long battle with technology and environmental devastation. With careful handling by director Stone and sensitive portrayal by Shallot Copley, we are able to identify with the Unabomber’s rationalizations and his building fury and frustration. The subjective perspective spares the audience the bloody horror of the actual bombings, and brilliantly leaves us pondering the extent to which the madman was a monster.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022, directed by Sophie Hyde, 97 minutes). A young sex worker with the skills of a psychotherapist + an older, widowed school teacher (Emma Thompson) who has never experienced an orgasm = Mutual Maturation in four sessions.

We will not watch the films together prior to the discussion. Participants should watch the films beforehand or begin screening on their own before 5:00 pm PT (the combined viewing time is about 3.5 hours).

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

• Discuss how examination of suppressed family truths with an uninvolved third party can promote emotional growth and development
• Describe specific interventions of Leo Grande (other than physical touching) that are essentially psychotherapeutic maneuvers   
• Compare the boundary-protective “rules” in this film with those in a course of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and discuss what value they offer
• Discuss the obsessional fixations often manifest in individuals on the autistic spectrum, and differentiate from the patterns seen in neurotypical obsessives
• Discuss the approach(es) you would take if the Ted Kaczynski character were brought to you for treatment in the correctional facility in which he presently resides. What if he came to you for psychological help before his first felonious bombing?

Discussant Bios:

Seth Alt, PhD, is a cultural theorist and researcher whose area of expertise explores the intersections of psychoanalysis, museums, digital technology, and audience studies. Seth is a member of the IFLF (International Forums of the Lacanian Field) and a newly inscribed doctorate of Claremont Graduate University's Cultural Studies program, with a dissertation titled "The Pervert's Guide to the Museum." 

Dahlia Nissan Russ, PsyD, LCSW, is a psychoanalyst with a private practice in West Los Angeles. She is a senior faculty member at the New Center for Psychoanalysis. 

Thomas M. Brod, MD, Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA Geffen School of Medicine. He is a senior faculty member at NCP and the co-coordinator of the Film and Mind Series.
