Breathless, Jean-Luc Godard’s debut feature film, remains the definitive manifesto of the French New Wave (la nouvelle vague), and is often referred to as the first modern (as in self-reflective) movie. A deceptively simple story about a young couple on the lam after a robbery, it is both a homage to cinema with its multiple references to movies, and, with its innumerable innovations in style and departures from tradition, a critique of all that has been done before. Reflecting the alienation and antagonism of the youth of the day, it was a harbinger of the culture conflicts and gender wars that were to define the decade. Highlighting how culture and the psyche reflect each other, it begs the question as to which is more authentic – the mirror image or the “real” self?
