Description
Judy Kantrowitz’s seminal research established that a major determinant of the therapeutic outcome of psychoanalysis is dependent on the match-that is the fit between patient and analyst and their characters and lifelong conflicts. Her work has greatly increased our understanding of the role played by unconscious communications between patient and analyst in analytic work. The match is important not only in treatment, but also as a lens through which to understand and use supervision. The “triadic match”-the match between patient, analyst, and supervisor-is part of what determines the degree of success of the supervisory work and the kind of growth that can take place through it, for all three participants.
In her work, Dr. Kantrowitz pays close attention to the conscious and unconscious, moment-to-moment events of clinical process without losing sight of structural considerations and internal object relations. She hopes that her work will encourage psychoanalysts to learn something about themselves--and then do it again and again. Attending to the match can contribute not only to the patient’s growth, but also to the analyst’s.
Dr. Kantrowitz will present the first part of this 2-part series Saturday, October 1st, and the second part Saturday, October 22nd.
Register on this page for October 1st. Click here to see the description and to register for the October 22nd program.
Saturday, October 1st:
On day 1 of this two-part series, Dr. Kantrowitz will present her paper on the “Triadic Match” which extends her focus to the interaction of the match between characteristics of candidate, supervisor and patient, and its effects on the candidate’s learning and analytic work. Dr. Kantrowitz will also demonstrate the usefulness of having a third party listen to the kind of match taking place between analyst and patient.
