Tortured by Desire (or the Lack Thereof): The psychology of dating-aged men in an era of Internet porn
September 20, 2018, 8:00 - 10:00 PM
While viewing internet pornography has become a common habit for many men, a small percentage of viewers end up detrimentally affected. These individuals engage in addictive-like behavior they find hard to control even though it is taking a serious toll on the overall quality of their lives, particularly with reference to their object relations.
Dr. Tuch explores the psychology that contributes to an individual’s watching excessive amounts of internet pornography (IP). The course centers on the presentation of the analysis of a young man who was struggling with a habit that was consuming his life and about which he felt great shame. He’d become addicted to a brand of IP known as “cuckold pornography,” and the analysis of the cuckold storyline resulted in his ability to make substantial changes in his overall adaptation to life, particularly with regard to his interpersonal relations.
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Outline the dynamics of the Cuckold Pornographic Fantasy
- Develop a psychoanalytic approach to the treatment of those suffering from pornographic addiction
- Identify the characteristics of those who share a zero sum game world view.
Richard Tuch, MD, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, and training and supervising analyst at both The Psychoanalytic Center for California and the New Center for Psychoanalysis, where he also was the Dean of Training. Dr. Tuch received the Karl A. Menninger Memorial Award for Psychoanalytic Writing (1995) and the Edith Sabshin Teaching Award (2008) presented by the American Psychoanalytic Association, where he is currently the chair of the Scholarship section of the Department of Psychoanalytic Education. He has authored and/or co-authored four books and many of his papers appear in the four leading psychoanalytic journals. Dr. Tuch is Executive Editor of the Edinburgh International Encyclopedia of Psychoanalysis, and in January 2019 he becomes a Board member of JAPA. He is also producer of an educational film, entitled Freud: The Man, The Method and The Psychoanalytic Movement.
