Film and Mind Online: The Lost Daughter

March 25, 2022, 8:30 - 10:00 PM

Join NCP's Film and Mind series online!

images/Olivia.jpgThe Lost Daughter (2021, 2 hr 4 min), directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, is a film about deep wounds, most of them psychic. Based on the book by celebrated Neopolitan author Elena Ferrante, the site of action has moved from Italy to a Greek island. In short, a mature college professor confronts her unsettling past while on vacation from the U.S. Stimulated by observing another family, she finds unconscious dissociative maneuvers are insufficient to avoid (private) shame and misery; she suffers movingly (and privately) as layers of memory erupt from within her psyche, replaying the academic ambition and love-hunger that separated her from her own daughters when they were young. Starring Olivia Coleman, Jessie Buckley, and Dakota Johnson with Ed Harris and Peter Sarsgaard. Screens on Netflix.
