Countertransference: History, Evolution, Illustration

10:00 AM, December 9, 2017

Presented by Alan Karbelnig, PhD., ABPP

Some use countertransference to refer to reactions to patients’ transference; others believe countertransference encompasses the totality of psychoanalysts’ feelings towards their patients. In this three-hour course, Dr. Karbelnig begins by reviewing the initial definition of countertransference. He describes its evolution over time, and specifically delineates current controversies. The course concludes with a review of multiple case examples regarding the use of countertransference in clinical work.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to

• Explain the history of countertransference, enhancing their clinical effectiveness

• Examine the controversy regarding use of countertransference intended to directly improve clinical application
