The Exterminating Angel is Spanish director Luis Buñuel’s 1962 macabre comedy, made during his exile in Mexico from Franco’s Spain.  A group of haut-bourgeois guests attend a dinner party only to find that when the dinner is over, they are unable to leave the house of their host, for no apparent reason.  Their inexplicable confinement leads to the stripping away of their ‘civilized’ behavior, and mayhem, violence and death ensue as the ordeal drags on.  The film has been interpreted in a number of ways, including vulgar (simple) psychoanalytic ones, e.g. that given the right circumstances, the veneer of civilization breaks down and people turn into the beasts that they truly are.  In other words an interpretation that relies on a reductive id-ego-supergo reference.  However, this film also offers itself as a surreal depiction of Freud’s  Wiederholungszwang, or compulsion to repeat.  This concept, central to Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle, is of paramount importance to our understanding of, among other clinical phenomena, the negative transference and the negative therapeutic reaction.
