The Fabelmans (2022, 151 minutes) is a semi-autobiographical fable from Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner, which foregrounds the power of movies - how they can capture one’s imagination and help us work through our traumas. It highlights the genesis and development of creativity in the transitional space and its subsequent role in the adult cultural life.

We will not watch the film together prior to the discussion. Participants should watch the film beforehand or begin screening on their own before 6:15 pm PT.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

• Discuss the compulsion to repeat as a way to master a traumatic experience, drawing parallels between the incident depicted in the film and vignettes from clinical practice 
• Explain the phenomenon of transitional space within the mother-child relationship and how it continues to shape an adult’s psyche throughout their life
• Explain the contribution of autobiographical memory to the creative process in artistic form and narrative

Discussant Bios:

Bart Blinder, MD, is an adult and child psychoanalyst with over three decades of private practice and a senior faculty member at NCP. His career includes psychiatric education as a Clinical Professor and Director of Eating Disorder Treatment and Research at the University of California, Irvine. He also has published clinical research, textbooks, and articles. He has worked extensively with the APA, including special projects and leadership activities.

Michael Berlin, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Screenwriting and Film at Long Beach State, along with being the Film Curator at the Bowers Museum and hosting “Sneak Previews with Michael Berlin” at UC Irvine. He has been a member of the Writers Guild of America since 1985, working as both a writer and producer on numerous award-winning television series, TV movies, and feature films.
