The Card Counter (2021, 112 minutes), from writer-director Paul Schrader, explores themes of PTSD, guilt, and redemption in a thrilling, slowly unfolding tale of revenge. Our discussants will give a brief insight into the movie, elucidating the psychological aspects of the film, and use psychoanalytic concepts and theories to illustrate specific clinical and technical aspects of therapeutic work.

We will not watch the film together prior to the discussion. Participants should watch the film beforehand or begin screening on their own before 6:15 pm PT.

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

• Describe the dramatic arc of superego conflict manifest in the main characters of The Card Counter

• Discuss the psychodynamic relationship between revenge and redemption portrayed in The Card Counter

• Explain, from psychodynamic Ego theory, how Tell (Oscar Issac’s character) manages to demonstrate emotional chill while suffering intense PTSD

Discussant Bios:

Gerard Sobnosky, LMFT, is a psychoanalyst and licensed marriage and family therapist in San Pedro, CA. He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA), as well as on the APsaA Finance Committee, the American Psychoanalytic Foundation, and is Treasurer of the APsaA Candidates Council. He is also Vice President for North America for the International Psychoanalytic Studies Organization (IPSO) and serves on the Admissions Committee at the New Center for Psychoanalysis.

Elena Bezzubova, PhD, maintains a private practice in psychoanalysis in Newport Beach and teaches at University of California, Irvine and New Center for Psychoanalysis. She has authored numerous papers and presentations and runs the blog "Search for Self” for Psychology Today.
