October 7, 2023, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

*** Registration will close at 4:00 PM the day before the event. No registrations are possible after this time, no exceptions. ***

All times listed are in Pacific Time (PT) unless otherwise noted.

NCP is proud to present Alice Wexler, PhD, as she discusses her recent book, The Analyst: A Daughter’s Memoir. This presentation will take place both in person and online via Zoom. For those joining in person, we invite you to a complimentary brunch and book signing after the presentation.

Milton Wexler charted an unconventional road, from his beginnings as a lawyer in the late 1920s, to training with lay analyst Theodor Reik in the 1930s, to his work on schizophrenia at Menninger in the late 1940s, to his private practice as an analyst in Los Angeles in the 1950s and after. In presenting The Analyst: A Daughter's Memoir, historian Alice Wexler will discuss her motivation for writing this book and the challenges and pleasures of writing about a psychoanalyst father who was both a charismatic and a controversial figure in the cultural life of Los Angeles.

Listeners will come away with insights into:

  • Theodor Reik and lay analysis
  • Milton Wexler's contributions to psychoanalytic theory and practice, to the arts in Los Angeles, and to transformations in biomedical research on Huntington's and related disorders
  • Menninger in the late 1940s and the Schizophrenia Research Project
  • Masculinity and mentorship among psychoanalysts in the 1950s, including Milton Wexler's relationship with David Rapaport, an early proponent of ego psychology
  • The culture of the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute in the 1950s and early 1960s, covering the collaboration between Milton Wexler and Ralph "Romi” Greenson, leading to theories of "object constancy," "internalization of the analyst," and "the Non-transference Relationship in the Psychoanalytic Situation"
  • Finally, a look a the boundary crossing with celebrity patients in the 1970s

There will be a multimedia presentation and discussion with David James Fisher, PhD.

Brunch and a book signing will take place immediately following the presentation. Copies of The Analyst: A Daughter's Memoir, published in 2022, will be available for purchase (first come, first served) at that time.
