Directed by Kelly Freeman Craig, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023) is a film adaptation of the Judy Blume young-adult novel. Social, biological, and (to a much smaller extent) identity issues of puberty’s early edge are presented with charming verisimilitude (and earned a 99% positive rating on RottenTomatoes.com). In our discussion we will have opportunities to discuss the psychodynamic issues explicit in the film…and, importantly, unaddressed psychodynamic issues operating below the surface.

We will not watch the film together prior to the discussion. Participants should watch the film beforehand or begin screening on their own before 6:15 pm PT.

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

Describe the multivariate relationship between personal identity, religious identification, and value incorporation in the developmental line of superego function
Compare maternal vs. peer psychological influence of pubescent girls in approaching menarche
Describe how internalized issues of White culture dominance are maintained in psychological suppression by the specific use of tropes in this film in particular

Discussants:

Ronnie Kaye, PhD, LMFT, is a psychotherapist, psychoanalyst, author, and public speaker. She has a private practice in West Los Angeles and is on the teaching faculty of the New Center for Psychoanalysis. One of her specialties is the treatment of people facing a life-threatening illness. She has lectured extensively in the United States and internationally on the emotional dimension of the cancer experience, and her book, Spinning Straw Into Gold: Your Emotional Recovery from Breast Cancer, has helped and inspired many.

Deborah Lynn, MD, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist/general psychiatrist, and psychoanalytic candidate at the New Center for Psychoanalysis. She is in private practice in Westwood as well as a member of the clinical faculty at UCLA, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is a consultant at City of Hope in pediatric oncology. She is a lecturer at Reiss-Davis Child Development Center and she teaches in NCP’s Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program.

Program Coordinators: Thomas M. Brod, MD coordinates the NCP Film & Mind Program with Apurva Shah, MD.

Target audience: Mental health professionals and open to the public interested in psychoanalytic perspectives. Open to members and the community.
