Michael J. Diamond, PhD, FIPA

In this two-hour presentation, Dr. Diamond will examine larger social and cultural factors at play during today’s perilous times. He describes destructive populism and group regression as exemplified by malignant cult-like elements in the current political discourse. Using both a psychoanalytic and a cultural lens, he analyzes the development of paranoid, conspiratorial thinking and the dangerous fit between malevolent, proto-fascist leadership and group adherence to dangerous, unconscious phantasies arising in both extreme right-wing as well as passionate leftist enclaves. He concludes by considering approaches that potentially decrease the potency of the nation’s destructive elements while furthering healthier containment that strengthens the body politics’ nonpathological elements through managing its inherent tensions.

Learning Objectives

After attending this program, participants should be able to:

• Describe pathological dynamics in group relations, including aspects of group regression, malignant normality, psychotic functioning, cultism, thought control, and attacks on truth and objective reality

• Explain the role played by malignant leadership in fulfilling primitive unconscious group phantasies and furthering paranoid, conspiratorial thinking

• Summarize the social and psychological conditions that contribute to large group regression that entail the use of such mechanisms as splitting, projective identification, and omnipotence

• Describe the gender-related factors that contribute to systemic divisiveness and proto-fascist movements

Michael J. Diamond, PhD, FIPA, is a Training and Supervising Analyst at Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies. He has authored over ninety articles and chapters in the areas of masculinity, femininity, and gender theory; fathering and the paternal function; psychoanalytic technique and the analytic mind; trauma and dissociation; hypnosis and altered states; and group processes and social action including the just-published article in Psychoanalytic Inquiry’s special issue on “Perspectives on Populist and Fascistic States of Mind.”  In addition, he has authored five books including today’s featured book, Ruptures in the American Psyche: Containing Destructive Populism in Perilous Times. His other books include Masculinity and Its Discontents: The Male Psyche and the Inherent Tensions of Maturing Manhood; My Father Before Me: How Fathers and Sons Influence Each Other Throughout Their Lives; and The Second Century of Psychoanalysis: Evolving Perspectives on Therapeutic Action. He is widely known for his national and international presentations and is in private practice in Los Angeles, while remaining active in teaching, supervising, and writing.
