The 2023 Grotstein Memorial Lectures

The International Psychoanalytic Association’s Affiliated Institutes in Los Angeles—New Center for Psychoanalysis, the Psychoanalytic Center of California and Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies—in conjunction with the Regional Bion Symposium, proudly present:   

The 8th Annual James Grotstein Lectures

Exploring Psychoanalytic Technique in the Work of D.W. Winnicott, W.R. Bion, and Melanie Klein:  
A Three-Part British-American Series

In honor of James Grotstein's work in comparative psychoanalytic theory, we will hold a set of three online meetings on Saturday mornings (Pacific Time) in April and May, 2023. Throughout the international community, there was no more passionate analyst than James Grotstein in terms of his advocacy of learning from the various analytic traditions populating the universe. These meetings are geared primarily toward the analytic/mental health community, so practitioners from diverse clinical backgrounds are cordially invited. 

This program will be moderated by Agnes Regeczky, PhD, and Joseph Aguayo, PhD.

Please note the dates and times, as they vary. Attendance at all three sessions is strongly recommended.

Part 1: Saturday, April 15, 2023, 9:00 am to 11:00 am Pacific 

Winnicott's Analytic Technique: Learning from the Patient

Professor Lesley Caldwell, MA, PhD -- Visiting Professor, Psychoanalysis Unit, University College London

In this first presentation, Lesley Caldwell examines Winnicott’s clinical trajectory as a pediatrician, adult analyst, and child analyst from the 1930s to 1971 with a major focus on the developments of the 1960s. Winnicott's consistent attention to the primacy of the earliest environment and his work with babies, children, and disturbed adults in a variety of settings placed him firmly in the Middle, now Independent, group of British analysts; though he always considered Melanie Klein, one of his supervisors, to have made a profound contribution to psychoanalytic theory. He was particularly concerned with the development of the self and its absence as this emerged in the transference countertransference dynamic in certain patients; he argued for different forms of analysis for different kinds of patients, introduced an idea of ‘regression to dependence,’ and questioned the centrality of interpretation.

Bion’s Analytic Technique
 
Joseph Aguayo, PhD -- Training and Supervising Analyst, Psychoanalytic Center of California; Faculty, New Center for Psychoanalysis; Honorary Member, British Psychoanalytical Society
 
For this presentation, Joseph Aguayo takes up how Bion came to his Kleinian training as a seasoned psychiatrist who had worked intensively with groups.  Maintaining that his group work informed the kind of Kleinian analyst he subsequently became, specific attention will be paid to how he instigated variations on Kleinian technique by emphasizing that all analysis occurs in the ‘here and now,’ and need not rely on making past-to-present Freudian or Kleinian transference links.  Bion’s taking up of the wider notion of countertransference work, which allowed the analyst to be equally informed by the patient’s subjective reactions—as well as his own—will also be addressed.  While Bion fundamentally remained Kleinian in his clinical practices, he did so in his own distinctive way.

  • Describe what the Bionian analyst means by regarding all analysis as occurring in the 'here and now'
  • Summarize how the Bionian analyst deploys a wider and broader understanding of countertransference in the analytic situation and differentiate how the analyst uses the concept of role-responsiveness in the way he/she understands transference/countertransference problems
  • Explain Bion's overall implicit method of clinical inquiry

Klein's Analytic Technique

Professor Robert Hinshelwood, MD -- Professor Emeritus of University of Essex; Member, British Psychoanalytical Society; Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, London, UK

In the final part of our series, Robert Hinshelwood takes us back to Klein’s original psychoanalytic technique with children and adults—and establishes how she innovated analytic technique by reversing Freud’s emphasis on reconstructing the infantile/conflictual past of his patients as based on their adult psychopathology.  Klein instead emphasized early infantile mechanisms of projection and defense—and how they informed the subsequent pathology of the mature patient.  

In the third hour of this presentation, Hinshelwood makes comparison between Klein, Winnicott and Bion, attempting to tease out what the substantive differences were between these three analytic pioneers in terms of technique.

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:  

  • Explain how Klein differs from Winnicott when exploring with the patient the role and impact of his early childhood conflicts in terms of his adult functioning
  • Explain how Klein differs from Bion when exploring with the patient the role and impact of his early childhood conflicts in terms of his adult functioning
  • Compare Klein’s emphasis on all play analysis occurring in the register of the “here and now” with Bion's emphasis on all adult analysis occurring in the "here and now." Are they the same?

Professor Lesley Caldwell, LC, MA, PhD, is Visiting Professor in the Psychoanalysis Unit at University College London, a member now retired, from the British Psychoanalytic Association and a Clinical Associate of the British Psychoanalytical Society. She is currently a European representative on the IPA Board. She was a Training Analyst for the London Independents child training. She has taught theory and clinical practice in London and internationally, and has conducted ongoing seminars on Winnicott and the Independents to Understanding Primitive Mental States (UPMS) organized by Susan Finkelstein of New York City. She is a moderator for Haydee Faimberg’s Listening to Listening groups at European and international congresses. With Helen Taylor Robinson, she is Joint General editor of The Collected Works of Donald Winnicott and was responsible for the more than a hundred further entries added to the online edition in 2019. Her most recent publications include papers on transitional objects, Marion Milner, loneliness, affect in the consulting room, silence as analytic communication, and a book on the British Independents published in Chinese in Beijing.

Joseph Aguayo, PhD, is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of California, a Member of the New Center for Psychoanalysis, and in private practice in West Los Angeles. He is also a Guest Member of the British Psychoanalytical Society in London. His most recent publication, Introducing the Clinical Work of W.R. Bion, is based on a series of 16 video lectures given to Chinese students of psychoanalysis. The main focus of the book is a close examination of how Bion went about his work both in the consulting room and how he theorized his findings in a revision of the Kleinian and Freudian traditions. Two other publications are forthcoming: with Hinshelwood, Dermen, and Abel-Hirsch, Aguayo has authored Bion in the Consulting Room: His Implicit Method of Clinical Inquiry for the Routledge Bion Series; he is also editing a collection of papers that deal with D.W. Winnicott’s lecture visits to the United States in the 1960s: Winnicott in America (Oxford Univ. Press, 2024). 
 
Professor Robert Hinshelwood, MD, is Emeritus Professor of Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex, and worked in the British NHS for 30 years, including a period as Director of the Cassel Hospital. Central among his numerous and prolific publications that span over 35 years is the classic Dictionary of Kleinian Thought, which was recently revised by a team of Kleinian analysts led by Elizabeth Spillius. Most recently, he has co-edited a volume with Nino Torres, Bion’s Sources, (Routledge, 2013). And Research on the Couch (2013), and in 2016, Countertransference and Alive Moments. He enjoys traveling and lecturing in all three IPA regions around the world.  He is also a specialist in the history of Kleinian and Bionian psychoanalysis.
 
Agnes Regeczkey, LMFT, PhD, is a child, adolescent, and adult psychoanalyst in private practice in Palos Verdes, California. She is the co-founder and director of BriteMinds Learning Center, Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry & the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine and enjoys teaching with colleagues at the New Center for Psychoanalysis. Current academic research includes childhood sleep disturbances impacting development, atypical relational challenges and what changes and what stays the same in child development. Publications: with Joseph Aguayo, she published, “Small Group Collaborators and Adversaries in the London Kleinian Development,” Psychoanalytic Quarterly, July 2016. She is a co-editor with Joseph Aguayo and Lia Pistiner de Cortinas of Bion in Buenos Aires: Seminars, Case Presentation and Supervision, (Karnac, 2017). Presented at both the IPA 50th Congress in Buenos Aires, July 2015 and the IPA 51st Congress in London, (July, 2019).
