Description
Freud’s problem with religious beliefs and rituals—including a belief in God—is legendary. This talk reviews Freud’s argument against religion, focusing on aspects of his own personal psychology that contributed to his belligerent attitude toward faith and believers. Recent psychoanalytic work examining the nature of an individual’s connection with God furthers the field's appreciation of the motives that lead some to believe and others to disbelieve. Psychoanalysis benefits from working to develop a more nuanced appreciation of the psychology of believing and disbelieving. Theories about belief also address alternate forms of knowledge of the sort touted by conspiracy theorists.
Dr. Tuch has undertaken an exhaustive study of the history of psychoanalytic attitudes toward religion as well as new research in the area of God as an internal object. He will be sharing the results of his research with the audience.
