Learning Objectives

By the end of this conference, participants will to able to:

1. Describe the derivation of the concept of mentalization and differentiate it from other psychotherapies
2. Contrast non-mentalizing from mentalizing
3. Discuss the three social cognitive precursors to mentalization
4. Apply the four poles of mentalizing
5. Demonstrate management of arousal
6. Demonstrate use of the MBT therapist stance (i.e., not knowing)
7. Demonstrate basic mentalizing techniques: empathy, clarification and exploration
8. Demonstrate identification of poor mentalizing and good mentalizing
9. Recognize the importance of mentalizing affects, identify the affective narrative, and use relational mentalizing with a patient
10. Demonstrate ability to recognize non-mentalizing modes, psychic equivalence, teleological mode and pretend mode
11. Assess the patient's reliance on the three antecedents to mentalizing (psychic equivalence, teleological mode and pretend mode) and how to alter their therapeutic stance to be able to manage them 
12. Create a diagnostic assessment and case formulation of a personality disorder patient with special attention to the attachment styles, modes of non-mentalization present, and that anticipates potential obstacles to treatment
13. Assess suicidality as a loss of mentalization in the context of an attachment relationship
14. Create a therapy process that reduces the force of psychic equivalence and teleologic mode
15. Utilize a functional analysis to explore the events leading up to self-harm or a suicide attempt
16. Identify and use affect focus to clarify the interpersonal issues
17. Create and format a comprehensive MBT program employing psychoeducation, individual and group psychotherapies
18. Demonstrate facilitation of an MBT group
