New Center for Psychoanalysis
presents Part 2 of
The Fear & Hatred of Sex: The Faithful Infidelity of Jean Laplanche
Part 2: Presented by Gila Ashtor, PhD, on November 20, 2022, from 9 am to 1 pm Pacific Time. Register on this page.
You must register separately for Part 1 and the study groups. See details below.
Is Queer Theory Erotophobic? What did the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol have to do with the hatred of sex? Are we trauma over-informed, and if so, what are the unintended consequences?
Throughout this program on the fear and hatred of sex, we will encounter Laplanche’s ideas in psychoanalytic metapsychology and explore unique expositions of how we all may benefit from the “unfinished Copernican revolution.”
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:
- Identify how a Laplanchian metapsychology differs from Freudian and Lacanian models of the mind
- Elaborate contemporary psychoanalytic metapsychology, affect theory and relationality
- Identify erotophobic themes in various disciplines including politics, governance, and psychoanalysis
- Analyze various critiques of popular clinical and psychoanalytic theories including attachment theory, trauma theory, and queer theory
- Analyze the ethical limitations in queer studies, attachment theory, and traumatology
- Explain how Laplanchian metapsychology mitigates the erotophobic features in efforts toward social and sexual equality
- Apply Laplanche’s concepts of implantation and intromission to diagnosis and clinical understanding of trauma
- Analyze how Laplanche’s metapsychology may help expand existing Freudian and Lacanian models of the mind
- Describe what Laplanche means by the competing “Ptolemaic” and “Copernican” tendencies of psychoanalysis
- Describe the importance of the “seduction theory” to psychoanalysis, and in particular, how Laplanche’s ideas on this topic differ from existing formulations
- Define Laplanche’s concept of ‘enlarged’ sexuality and describe the meaning of this idea
- Describe how Laplanche’s theory of translation differs from prevailing theories of motivation
- Explain how Laplanche’s ideas of seduction, sexuality, and translation conduce to new conceptual foundations for psychoanalysis
