A contemporary filmic adaptation of the 14th-century chivalric poem by the same name, The Green Knight (directed by David Lowery) appears to tell the story of King Arthur's headstrong nephew Gawain from the time before he was to become a legendary knight of the Round Table. It is, in fact, an effective and original meditation of the twin (and entwined) psychological concepts of death denial and the mysteries of responsible masculinization. The film slyly raises (through the illusion of witchcraft) the issue of maternal love in preparing the son to leave the infantile erotic position.

  • Discuss whether masculinization (adult responsibility) can be engendered by maternal intervention or whether that is another myth portrayed in the film The Green Knight
  • Explain how conscious denial of death in the individual has an impact on the evolution of social institutions over generations of lifetimes using The Green Knight as a narrativized example
