Parallel Mothers (2021, 120 minutes), written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, is a story that’s simultaneously deeply personal and overtly political. It’s an intimate tale of the psychological journey of two women as they become mothers and their intertwined lives, but it’s also about Spain’s troubled history, and the way the past traumas continue to color and shape the future. In the art of filmmaking, Almodóvar reigns supreme in creating a “social drama” that is psychologically revealing and is gorgeous to behold and saturated in human vitality.

  • Discuss the liminality and confusion of the transition to motherhood, defining the psychic impasses that accompany even privileged maternity
  • Assess the effects of “disappeared men”: the valorized deprecation and marginalization of paternal and male efficacy in contemporary culture, and the corresponding hole at the place of phallic signification
