Study Group for Babies and Toddlers on the Couch? Early Intervention with Psychosomatic Illness

June 12, 2022, 1:00 - 2:30 PM

Study Group for

The Art of Psychosomatics: Babies and Toddlers on the Couch? Early Intervention with Psychosomatic Illness

This study group will be facilitated by Van Dyke DeGolia, MD.

To better appreciate the upcoming lecture by Christine Anzieu-Premmereur on June 18, we will study some of her contributions to our psychoanalytic understanding of psychodevelopmental body roots, unregulated and unsymbolized, expressed after deprived and traumatic nurturing experiences, as persisting somatic symptoms. Psychoanalytic variations in technique will be suggested and illustrated to facilitate emergence of an adaptive, regulated and relationally engaged self-organization.

You will receive a link to access readings. Please come to the study group having read the material. Required readings for this study group session are the following papers by Christine Anzieu-Premmereur: "The process of figurability in early childhood," "Suppression of affects and psychosomatic balance: The Paris Psychosomatic School's clinical theory on somatic disorders in children," and "The role of play in mother-infant psychotherapy;" and Van Dyke DeGolia's 'Discussion of Stephen Seligman's "Winnicott's Baby...".' Dr. DeGolia has also prepared a list of orienting questions.
