Another great and vivid film from two-time Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro, Nightmare Alley (2021, 2hr 20 min) inserts us into a survival tale of a desperate man (Bradley Cooper) who rises out of carney life in the early 1940s to join forces with a posh and vengeful psychoanalyst (Cate Blanchette).

DISCUSSION: 8:30 PM - 10:00 PM - We will hear from our discussants and explore the film together. 

We will not watch the film together prior to the discussion. Participants should watch the film beforehand or begin screening on their own before 6:45 pm PT.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss superego lacunae and the instigation of character corruption in Nightmare Alley as a model of clinical disturbance in “ordinary” character development
  • Discuss the relationship of "anxiety dreams” (nightmares) and the filmic production of anxiety in terms of the pleasure received by viewers
  • Explain how the key features of unconscious determinism of Freud’s “return of the repressed” are illustrated in the film Nightmare Alley

Discussants:

Joshua Richmond, MPW, is a psychoanalyst practicing in South Pasadena. He is a member of the New Center of Psychoanalysis, currently co-teaching the Interpretation of Dreams. Joshua Richmond is also a screenwriter and vested member of the Writers Guild of America West, and was an adjunct professor at Cal State Fullerton for four years where he taught in the Radio, Television and Film Department. 

Warren R. Procci, MD, is Senior Faculty at NCP, Health Sciences Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Geffen UCLA School of Medicine, and is a Past President of the American Psychoanalytic Association. 

Discussion Moderator: Thomas M. Brod, MD. Dr. Brod coordinates the NCP Film & Mind Program with Apurva Shah, MD.
