But unlike other movies in the Western genre, this movie is a tale that rotates around conflicted masculinity and its developmental line. Written and directed by Jane Campion, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Screens on Netflix.

We will not watch the film together prior to the discussion. Participants should watch the film beforehand or begin screening on their own on Netflix (subscription) before 6:15 pm PST.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe “masculine primordial vulnerability” as it emerges in this film and list several common defensive manifestations of its avoidance
  • Compile and contrast pre-phallic, phallic, and genital-based features of the male psyche and the applicability to clinical work with patients and clients
  • Discuss contemporary psychoanalytic understandings of the “masculine” and “feminine” orientations

 

Discussants:

Michael J. Diamond, PhD, is a Training and Supervising Analyst at LAISPS. He has authored three books, including My Father Before Me: how fathers and sons influence each other throughout their lives, The Second Century of Psychoanalysis: evolving perspectives on therapeutic action (with C. Christiani), and the recent Masculinity and its Discontents: the male psyche and the inherent tensions of maturing manhood. Dr. Diamond has published over 90 articles and book chapters as well. He is in private practice in Los Angeles. 

Elizabeth Trawick, MD, is a training and supervising analyst with Birmingham-New Orleans Psychoanalytic Center. Before leaving Los Angeles twelve years ago to live in Alabama, she was a training and supervising analyst and active faculty member at NCP and PCC. She is a past president of NCP (then LAPSI). In addition to practicing psychoanalysis, she is developing skills as a writer and plans to celebrate her eightieth birthday in two years with the publication of her first novel. 

Discussion Moderator: Thomas M. Brod, MD. Dr. Brod coordinates the NCP Film & Mind Program with Apurva Shah, MD.

 

Target audience: Mental health professionals and open to the public interested in psychoanalytic perspectives. Open to members and the community.
