Film and Mind Online: Closer

December 10, 2021, 8:30 - 10:00 PM

Join NCP's Film and Mind series online!

(1h, 44m) With Closer (2004), director Mike Nichols is still just as fascinated by couples’ tenuous relationships as he was in his renowned Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966) some forty years earlier. Except that Closer is far more open-ended than WAVW. Interpreted by a no less remarkable cast (Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Jude Law and Clive Owen), Closer is calling for psychoanalysts' variegated interpellations, as it features four complex protagonists—hence six potential relationships—and a virtuoso set of matching crisscrossing couples’ crosscut breakups. (Just the same, feel free to experience Closer as a relationship “horror flick.”)

As you privately screen the film before our film event, you might want to be prepared to discuss which character (and which couple) might benefit the most from therapy, which character you would like to see on your couch, as well as which character seems “unanalyzable.” Presentation with film excerpts, followed by Q&A.
