Sound of Metal (2020) (2hr, 10 min; directed by Darius Marder) is a tightly made and deeply humanistic film about a punk-metal drummer, Ruben (Riz Ahmed), who experiences hearing loss. It is about his love for music and his partner (Olivia Cooke). When he learns his condition will rapidly worsen, he anticipates losing everything meaningful to him. Utilizing startling, innovative sound design techniques, director Darius Marder takes audiences inside Ruben’s experience to vividly recreate his journey into a rarely examined world. Sound of Metal is a compelling film that immerses the viewer in the subjective experience of onset of deafness and explores the profound implications for relatedness, loss, desire, recovery, dis-integration, and reintegration.

6:15 PM - 8:30 PM: Group viewing of the movie with a silent chat. We will join the Zoom meeting and press "play" simultaneously to watch the movie together. 8:45 PM - 10:15 PM: Discussion begins. We will hear from our discussants and explore the film together.

• Explain Derrida and Freud's ideas of the voice and the trace in relation to the cochlear implant and Deaf Studies
• Describe Ruben's experiences in terms of dis-integration and reintegration
• Discuss the transformations Ruben undergoes using Lacanian concepts of lack and desire 

Discussants:

Gerard Sobnosky, LMFT, is in private practice in Manhattan Beach and Rolling Hills Estates, CA. He is an advanced Clinical Associate at the New Center for Psychoanalysis, and a member of the Education Committee. He is active in the International Psychoanalytical Association and the American Psychoanalytic Association, where he serves on the American Psychoanalytic Foundation, and as Treasurer of the Candidates Council. He teaches dream analysis workshops for clinicians, leads psychoanalytic therapy process groups, teaches Chinese therapists as part of the Chinese-American Psychoanalytic Alliance, and is also a recording artist with his rockabilly trio Those Sunsabillys.

Seth Alt is a doctoral student in the Cultural Studies program at Claremont Graduate University, where he is working on a dissertation loosely titled, "The Pervert's Guide to the Museum." When not running the gauntlet of the PhD Seth sometimes plays fiddle at Irish sessions in Long Beach and Pasadena.
