Film and Mind Online: Spaceship Earth

January 8, 2021, 6:45 - 10:15 PM

Join NCP as we take our Film and Mind series online!

images/Spaceship_Earth_pic.jpgSpaceship Earth (2020) (113 minutes) is the true, stranger-than-fiction adventure of eight visionaries who in 1991 spent two years quarantined inside a self-engineered replica of Earth's ecosystem called BIOSPHERE 2. The Matt Wolf documentary traces the origin and dynamics of a group who passionately invent a series of environments (a theater, a farm, a ship, a biosphere) that reflect and enable the meaningful life they seek. The bond of shared—and co-developed—values is set against the onslaught of external difficulties. Group dynamics play off the diverse individuals bound to explore their highest human potential.  The film explicitly examines the role of a charismatic leader and the benefit and destructiveness of his narcissism. Additionally, this rich film also touches on the question of what constitutes "real" science, a topic that evokes analysts’ discussion of the extent to which psychoanalysis is a science.
