France, 1770. Teen romance sparks and flickers. Marianne, a portrait painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride-to-be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly. Who attends the fire? 

With the discussion of this film, we will illustrate how psychoanalytic exploration revises the superficial filmic narrative to reveal the unpredicted facets of the compliant mind plus the transformations of love experience on adolescent rigidity.

6:45 PM - 8:45 PM: Group viewing of the movie with a silent chat. We will join the Zoom meeting and press "play" simultaneously to watch the movie together. 8:45 PM - 10:15 PM: Discussion begins. We will hear from our discussants and explore the film together. 1.5 CE/CME credits

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

• Describe coping mechanisms used by women in the male-dominated society of 1770 to live authentic lives

• Explain how the women were able to deal with the traumatic event of Sophia by way of artist expression

• Describe how the “female gaze” illustrated in the relationship between Marianna and Helose, and its application to clinical practice

• Explain the difference between the status of the psychoanalytic gaze and what is often taken to be the gaze in feminist cultural theory, or, put another way, describe what psychoanalysis has to offer queer theory

• Discuss articulations between the inside-out structure of the gaze and what Lacan calls the object-cause of desire while also sustaining a differentiation between a portrait and an image

Discussants:

Seth Alt is a doctoral student in the Cultural Studies program at Claremont Graduate University where he is working on a dissertation loosely titled, "The Pervert's Guide to the Museum." When not running the gauntlet of the PhD Seth sometimes plays fiddle at Irish sessions in Long Beach and Pasadena.

Carol Hekman, PhD, is a core faculty member and a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at NCP.  She has been involved in NCP committees for many years and is a former NCP Secretary and Chair of the Training and Supervising committee. She has been on the board at Rose City Center.  She maintains a psychotherapy and psychoanalytic practice for adults and older adolescents in Pasadena.

Target audience: Mental health professionals and open to the public interested in psychoanalytic perspectives. Open to members and the community.
