(2hr 34 min) (2020) Spike Lee explores the twin traumas of the war in Vietnam and racial injustice at home. We will use the screening of the film to have a guided discussion of these two psychologically dislocating conditions. Schedule
6:00 PM - 8:35 PM: Group viewing of the movie with a silent chat. We will join the Zoom meeting and press "play" simultaneously to watch the movie together. 8:45 PM - 10:15 PM: Discussion begins. We will hear from our discussants and explore the film together.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to
- List examples of racism “hiding in plain sight” experienced by Veterans of Color during and since the Vietnam War
- Describe how combat-related events lead to PTSD and their long-term effects on health, self, and relationships
- Elucidate the psychological case for Reparations
- Identify some of the psychodynamics underlying racism.
Discussants:
Hannah Roggenkamp, MD, serves as the acting deputy section chief for outpatient trauma treatment within the Greater LA VA Healthcare system and is Clinical Instructor at Geffen-UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Roggenkamp specializes in studying and treating combat PTSD, moral injury and blast traumatic brain injury. She specializes in intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy, and has wide-ranging teaching responsibilities within the UCLA and Greater LA VA psychiatry residency programs.
Apurva Shah, MD, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, and the chief of the department at Kaiser Permanente in Antelope Valley. An Associate member of the New Center for Psychoanalysis, he is the co-coordinator of the Film and Mind Series. He is also the Founding Director and Faculty at the Antarnad Foundation, a not-for-profit psychoanalytic psychotherapy training program, in Ahmedabad, India. In his publications, he focuses on the cultural facets of the psyche, using examples from movies.
Target audience: Mental health professionals and open to the public interested in psychoanalytic perspectives. Open to members and the community.
