For psychoanalysts and child and adult therapists, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse brings multiple professional discussion points. The universal oedipal inflection point of early adolescence, the meaning of “superpower” in contemporary culture are the classic themes. Beyond that, the growing influence of psychedelic drugs can be explored from the twin perspectives of developing clinical indications and also implications for potential abuse in adolescent populations. 

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (winner of the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film) presents a new version of superpowers when the psychedelic spider bites. Teen Miles Morales becomes Spider-Man of his reality, crossing his path with five counterparts from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.  “This rousingly entertaining superhero adventure is everything a great family movie should be: laugh-out-loud funny, filled with teachable moments” (Sandie Anguelo Chen, Common Sense Media). We will examine the underlying psychodynamic forces revealed in this surprisingly original animated film with a psilocybin bent.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

• Explain the role of the Superhero as imago in contemporary culture; apply to your own clinical practice

• Explain the self-authorizing characteristic of psychedelic drugs on the basis of the film Spider-Man and also your clinical practice

• Predict how the advent of therapeutic psychedelic medications will affect psychotherapeutic (psychodynamic) practice in the foreseeable future

• Outline the role of childhood fantasy (conscious) in the resolution of Oedipal father-son conflicts in this film and seen in your practice

Discussants:

Thomas Brod, MD, co-director of the NCP Film & Mind series, is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA Geffen School of Medicine. He has a private practice in west Los Angeles.

Luis Alejandro Nagy, PhD, is a psychoanalyst and a computer scientist who practices in Arcadia, CA. In addition, he works as Chair of the IPA Social Media Committee and member of NCP.  He is also a member of the Training Committee and a supervisor at the Rose City Center, Pasadena. With a special interest in films and communications, he serves as advisor to the Website Editorial Committee of the IPA and was former Chair of Communications of the Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies of Latin-America.  He is a Professor and a Training Analyst at the Chinese American Psychoanalytic Alliance and an international speaker promoting online safety and prevention through detection of pathological use of the internet in treating children and adults.

Keith Heinzerling, MD, is an Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine physician and Director of the Pacific Treatment & Research in Psychedelics (TRIP). He is Associate Professor Health Sciences, Dept. of Family Medicine, UCLA Geffen School of Medicine.

Megan Rundel PhD,  is a Personal and Supervising Analyst at Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC) with a private practice of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and psychedelic integration in Oakland Ca.  She is a student and teacher (authorized Sensei) of Zen meditation.  She is a graduate of the Center for Psychedelic Therapy and Research at CIIS.  Recommended reading: Rundel, M. “The Fire of eros: Sexuality and the movement toward union.” Psychoanalytic Dialogues, 25(5):614-630, 2015.
