Pain and Glory (Pedro Almodóvar, 2019) is a film about aging and reflection on the meaning of life, starring Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz. It tells of a series of reencounters experienced by a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity, the first desire, his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s, the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense, writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable, the early discovery of cinema, and the void, the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films. Pain and Glory talks about creation, about the difficulty of separating it from one's own life, and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past, the fictionalized director endures the urgent pressure to recount it.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:

• Describe how artistic sensibilities may present as psychopathological peculiarities and consider how to circumvent transferential prejudice
• Explain how the territorial conflict between artist and analyst arises from the diametrically different approach to “Unconscious” experience
• Prepare patients and clients to face the terror and pain in aging through the anticipatory grieving process

Discussants:

Angel Cienfuegus, MD, is a psychiatrist in Los Angeles. He is the medical director of a mental health urgent care and an Associate Clinical Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA as well as a Clinical Associate at NCP. He continues to be connected with the culture of his country of origin, Spain.

Pranav Shah, MD, is a psychiatrist and a psychoanalytic psychotherapist who is passionate about movies and their use in illustrating the fundamental principles of psychoanalysis. He has co-authored a psychoanalytic study of the films of the renowned Indian auteur, Satyajit Ray.

Target audience: Mental health professionals and open to the public interested in psychoanalytic perspectives. Open to members and the community.
