“Since the invasion of the Nazi destroyed several of our institutions in Europe, it is a great comfort to learn that new ones are to spring up on the soil of America. My friend and pupil Ernst Simmel is about to build up a Psychoanalytic Institute at Los Angeles. I think he is the right man to achieve it.”

— Sigmund Freud

A Tradition of Excellence

The New Center for Psychoanalysis has an established tradition of excellence as a training and research institution dating back to the mid-twentieth century. In the 1940's, analysts and trainees from across Europe and the United States flocked to Los Angeles, specifically to join this flourishing center of psychoanalytic thought.

Over the ensuing decades, Los Angeles became home to a host of eminent analysts, and several vibrant psychoanalytic organizations emerged. A major milestone was achieved in 2005 when the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (LAPSI) and the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute and Society (SCPIS) reunited to form the New Center for Psychoanalysis (NCP).

The New Center for Psychoanalysis is affiliated with both the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Psychoanalytic Association. Our members and students participate in national and international organizations, promoting worldwide collaboration.
